The Digital Transcription Career

Digital transcription jobs can be found in a number of places such as hospitals, doctor’s offices, clinics and other types of medical facilities. This type of job can also be found at home. As one of the most popular work- at- home careers, the digital transcriptionist can have a career that is based around their own schedule, allowing for flexibility and the ability to be your own boss. Here we’ll find out the steps that need to be taken in order to work from home as a certified MT, the digital transcription salary as well the MT educational requirements.

As an MT your main responsibility will be to spend hours at a computer, listening to recordings of detailed accounts made by a patient’s physician, regarding surgeries, procedures and exams. An MT must then apply this information to reports which then become part of a patient’s permanent record. During the transcription the MT will use a foot pedal that allows them to pause the recording in order to transcribe it. A MT will also need to apply the proper grammar, edit the conversation so that it directly applies to a particular procedure as a physician can have a recording on for an extended length of time while there are long pauses or the physician will become interrupted while the recording is still going.

In order to become employed in this field a transcriptionist will need to have completed either a one year certificate program or obtain a two year bachelor’s degree. You can find these programs at online universities, community colleges and vocational schools. Once you have completed one of these programs you will need to take the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity exam in order to become a registered digital transcriptionist. This test will consist of 91 multiple choice questions and will require a minimum score of 80% in order to pass.

As an MT you will be required to earn continuing education credits before you can renew your license every three years. You can earn these credits by attending webinars and seminars and by completing a number or different online study courses provided by the AHDI.

Once you are ready to begin your career you can decide whether you want to work at a medical facility or join a digital transcription company. The MT companies work by assigning you work based off of their client list. You can work for hospitals, clinics, private practices and other medical facility, which allows you to work from your home office.

You will be able to make your own schedule to complete your assigned work and will have deadlines for each client’s caseload. When doing this type of work you will be given a set amount of compensation, even if you finish before the deadline, whereas working in a hospital or other medical facility enables you to earn an hourly rate. By working from home you can also determine how many hours you want to spend each week working. You can do this on a part-time or full-time basis. There are many people that will do this type of work as a way to supplement their income, even those MT’s that work full-time with other medical companies.

The salary for this type of position will vary and depend on your level of education, whether you work from home or at a medical facility and your years of experience in the field.

Those with an associate’s degree can expect to make 5,000$ to 6,000$ more their first few years in the field as opposed to those that have completed a one year certificate program. The average annual salary for the certificate programs is 18,000$ to 22,000$ to start. After a few years of experience you can expect to make 25,000$ to 30,000$.

In order to increase your income you can take on additional work by joining a work-at home digital transcription Company, or you can apply for a supervisory role at a medical facility, once you have had a significant amount of experience in the field. As a supervisor you’ll have the potential to earn 45,000$ to 50,000$ annually.

Digital transcription jobs can also be found through the school in which you graduated. Most of these programs will offer students job placement assistance after graduation and will continue to help their alumni during their first few years in the field and can also provide a database of available jobs, exclusively to their graduates.
